The work generally forms part of the landscaping and finishing of infrastructure projects, for example:

along roads, ditches, waterways and sewerage works.

Bank protection works

With bank protection works, banks, slopes, ditches or construction pits are reinforced to prevent soil from subsiding, crumbling or eroding.

Bank protection can be carried out, among other things, with wooden posts and planks, plastic elements, concrete or steel sheet piles.

The chosen method depends on the soil conditions, water pressure, height differences and technical specifications of the project.

The work may consist of:

  • Setting out and preparing the work zone
  • Placing or driving in posts
  • Assembling planks, panels or other retaining elements
  • Applying geotextile to prevent soil washout
  • Backfilling and compacting soil behind the bank protection
  • Restoring and profiling banks and slopes
  • Working with small equipment, excavators or hydraulic tools
  • Checking the stability and correct alignment

Bank protection is mainly used to protect banks and watersides, but can also serve to stabilise slopes and inclines along roads.

Seeding

After the earthworks, verges, slopes and other green zones are relaid.

The subsoil is prepared, levelled and, where necessary, provided with topsoil. An adapted grass or herb mixture is then sown.

The work includes, for example:

  • Removing stones, waste and excess soil
  • Breaking up and levelling the soil
  • Applying and levelling topsoil
  • Manual or mechanical seeding
  • Lightly working in or pressing down the seed
  • Possibly installing erosion-protection mats
  • Restoring verges and green zones after infrastructure works

The aim is not only a neat finish, but also to limit erosion and stabilise the soil again.
